Keep on Truckin'
12/14/2018
As 2018 is coming to a close we are continuing to work hard and push ourselves in 1st Grade, and luckily with the recent snowfall it looks like we might be having a white Christmas! Something I am very happy about. In writing we are continuing our work with instructional texts. After exploring many examples of instructional texts from profesional companies, lego instructions and recipes we have good knowledge on how to create and write our own sets of instructions. We put this into practise by creating and writing instructions on how to make a paper airplane. This turned into an extended writing piece with some children writing over 3 pages in their books as well as managing to keep good presentation and handwriting as hands became tired from writing so much! In math we are becoming very competent using and understanding place value in our work. Though we will continue to practise and use it almost everyday in our math lessons. Place value is an integral and important part of math and is almost like a gateway into the larger math world. Here is a short article that explains how important place value is: www.matific.com/us/en-us/blog/2016/04/11/why-place-value-is-so-important/ We also visited 2nd Grade who have been working on creating their own shops and stores. Each child was given a bag of money and allowed to go around visiting other stores and purchase items that 2nd Grade had created. The only rule...they had to spend all their money. 2nd Grade did a fantastic job hosting 1st Grade and helping guide 1st Grade in buying items. A great mini lesson and showcase of the practical use of money.
