Middle School Museum

The second graders were given the opportunity to visit the museum created by the 7th and 8th grades this week. They were able to practice important communication skills as they interacted with the middle school students and discussed their exhibits. They were able to independently explore some of the exhibits that had more of an interactive feature. The second graders were amazed by some of the ingenious ways in which the middle schoolers created their exhibits. They were also able to stand back and silently contemplate the information that was being presented.
As we left the museum, the kids were still discussing the things that they saw. This type of cross-age activity is so important to both ages. This is one of several times that these two grade levels were able to interact with each other within an academic setting. In December, the Middle Schoolers visited our class store and provided an authentic audience for our project. They also came down during "The Hour of Code" and helped the second graders learn coding. This past week it was our turn to come and help them celebrate their hard work. Watching how these two groups of students comfortably interact with each other is another reminder about how strong our community is and how important it is to support one another. It's Finally Finished!

You know that old saying, "It takes a village..."? That holds true to other things besides raising children. These last two weeks it has also applied to finishing a very large mural. There were so many people involved with the creation (and finishing) of this project! In the beginning, Ms. Tabitha and Mr. Daniel helped out with logistics and gave their input on various topic ideas. Ms. Mariner and her husband Chuck, the holder of all fishy knowledge, gave wonderful advice regarding salmon coloring and anatomy. Kennadi's dad Jeremy helped us to understand how our Alaskan salmon is transported to other places. And finally Ms. Jaeger, who helped the 2nd and 3rd graders bring those salmon to life with a few finishing details that made all the difference! We thank you and appreciate you all so much!
We talk a lot about what a solid community PNA has amongst the families and students, but it's worth mentioning that the faculty and staff of PNA really support and encourage and help each other as well. The installation of the mural will take place in the next couple of weeks and we will have a big unveiling. Be sure to look out for that invitation to see what we've accomplished together! Through Their Eyes

One of my favorite writing units each year is the poetry unit. I love how students at this age say what they're thinking and I love looking at the world through their eyes. Every year, I am amazed at what these young poets come up with and grateful that I get a peek into their incredible imaginations. It's a fresh and very welcome way of looking at things. Below are the rough drafts of a few poems that were written this week. Each student will be completing their own anthology of poetry to bring home soon, each with varying styles of poems they've written. Pink and red are |
