What Makes You Feel Welcomed?

Welcome to Third Grade! It is a brand new year, a new school, two new teachers, and some brand new classmates! It is a new and exciting adventure for our third graders! At PNA, we believe that the first six weeks of school is a critical period because this is when we establish a warm, predictable, and orderly classroom for academic achievement. It is a time of introductions: from students to the classroom, to the school environment, and to the expectations we hold about learning. So, to create a climate and tone of warmth and safety, the first three days of third grade focused on conversations and activities that promote a sense of belonging. "What makes me feel welcomed is when people give compliments and when people say hi to me." "When we tell each other about each other." "When people are nice." "Knowing everybody's name" "To make me feel welcomed is seeing my friends" "What helps me feel welcomes is when someone says good morning." - 3rd Grade "Play with them" "Invite people to my soccer games." "Welcome them to the school and invite them to play." "Ask them to play with us." "Welcome them into our game." "I will play with them and say hi." "Play a game that everyones likes to play." "I will go over and say would you like to play, you look sad?" "Play with them" "Ask them to play with me" "Be nice to people and ask them to play if they are alone." "I'm going to say hey there, you want to come and play with me and my friend?" -3rd Grade Just like in the real world, a sense of belonging is a human need. Connection and a sense of belonging make us feel happy and secure. Thus, they help improve our motivation, mental and emotional health, and happiness. |
