Students have been studying the Age of Discovery and have learned about the expeditions of various famous explorers. However, questions remain. Did exploration primarily only happen during that time? Were Europeans the only ones to explore? What forms of exploration are still occuring today?
To learn about learn about some of the advances in ocean navigation, Paul Fuhs came in to speak to the class about his work with the northern sea route. Students learned about this new area of exploration, and how the desire to find a better sea route between Europe and Asia, is not completely unlike the pursuit of some of the explorers during the Age of Discovery. Thanks to Paul for the great presentation! Learning about Navigation

Students were treated to two great guest speakers (that also happen to be parents) this week on the topic of exploration. Our first guest speaker, Paul Fuhs spoke briefly to the students about navigation with a sexton and chronometer.
Our second speaker, Lorraine Borys taught an interactive lesson involving maps and secret codes. Students competed in small groups to complete a mission by decoding messages in cypher code and morse code. Students also learned about air navigation and used real airplane navigation charts (donated by Merrill Field) to chart a course to the mission’s destination. Students really enjoyed both presentations. Thanks again to the guest speakers! Sharing is Connecting

At PNA put a lot of focus into the 4 C's, which are creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.
Collaboration can come in many forms from working together on projects, to collaborative problem solving, to just helping each other from time to time. The pictures below show students during our daily snack time working collaboratively on giant coloring pages. Kids have to work together to create each image. |
