Making Graphing Fun
12/21/2017
How can we make graphing fun? Let's graph interesting things! What is the rate of dehydration of a carrot? Let's graph it! What is the rate or re-hydration of a carrot? What are the foot lengths of students? What are the heights of students? These are some of the questions we asked ourselves in order to practice graphing and analyzing data. The markings with student heights will remain up in the room so we can graph student growth next semester. Enjoy a few pictures of our activities below. Have a great winter break!
Why do we Explore?
12/15/2017
5th grade has begun our unit on Exploration with the question, why do we explore? To dig into this question a little further, students interviewed a parent about a time when they explored, whether in the form of a travel adventure or outdoor adventure. Students recorded the stories, and the audio will be used in a project that celebrates the adventures of their parents and also seeks to understand what leads people to want to explore. Below are some pictures from our parent snack when our interviews took place. Thanks to the 5th grade parents who participated!
Mold Experiments
12/8/2017
We finished up our ecosystems with a couple of projects. As part of our study of decomposition, students created mold terrariums that are all the same except for one variable of their choosing. Students have data sheets where they evaluate their terrariums over the next couple of months.
We've also been working this week on planning for the location of a PNA greenhouse. PNA is interested in building a greenhouse, and 5th grade has taken charge of the planning process. Students have been studying greenhouse requirements, the terrain of the property, access to water, and other factors in order to identify the most ideal locations on the PNA campus. We are developing a proposal that we will present to the admin of the school and then to the church for final approval. Wish us luck! Below are some pictures of our mold terrariums. Feel free to check them out in the classroom, especially as the become more interesting! Games build Community
12/1/2017
Why do we play games as part of our morning meeting ritual? The games can have benefits beyond just having fun.
The social benefits of games include creating deeper friendships social cohesion among all peers. This benefit easily translates into more successful collaboration in academic activities. Playing games teaches students the importance of healthy communication. Games require communicating with peers in clear, positive, and supportive ways. Healthy communication is also a fundamental skill to academic success. There are many more reasons beyond these as to how games benefit children both socially and academically. One of the most visible benefits is that it helps children develop a positive outlook toward school. Enjoy the pictures below of students playing classroom games during morning meeting. Have a great week. |
