All About Me
8/31/2019
Welcome to our Early-Kindergarten Orcas Class! This week we began our "All About Me" theme! We focused on emotions, family, and learning more about each other! The students drew blueprints and used large wooden blocks to create their homes in our Block Center. This activity allowed children to use their creativity and strengthen their gross motor skills. This week we worked on learning letters in our names and practiced writing them. We also created family portraits. The students demonstrated emergent writing skills as they drew their family portraits and wrote about each family member. We continued to explore our math center and played a variety of math games. Students used number concepts and operations in the roll and cover game. Each child rolled an eight sided dice and covered numbers on the sheet with a pebble. Additionally, we used number play dough mats to promote hands-on number recognition, counting, and fine motor skills. One way we practiced patterns and sorting was with pompoms. I arranged different colored pompoms, a muffin tray and tweezers in our sensory bin for some extra fine motor practice. The class talked about colors that make them feel happy, sad and angry. They painted a feeling using techniques taught in Mrs. Jaeger's Art Class! We acted out each emotion and described what would make us feel that way. The children also played a quick memory match game with emotion cards during small group activity. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other. We had our first Show and Tell on Friday where students brought something that made them happy. The students took turns sharing the items brought from home and engaged in discussion about each item. This activity allowed students to participate cooperatively and constructively in a group. Lastly, we wrapped up our "All About Me" and emotions theme by making happy cards. By the end of the week, all the students had become good friends and created cards for each other. They thought about what letters are in their friend's name and drew pictures of things they may like.
