The Buildings of our Neighborhood

Happy Thanksgiving!
During this study we are going to get a lot of practice creating buildings out of many different types of materials. This week we made basic buildings out of paper bags, focusing on windows, doors, and roofs. The students then played with them, lining them up into a neighborhood.
On Friday we paired up with our kindergarten friends, who read us the stories they have been practicing! Our explorers were impressed with the kindergarteners different voices and reading skills. We are excited for more opportunities to work with this awesome kindergarten class. Thanksgiving Fun
For Thanksgiving we made silly turkeys, wrote Thanksgiving cards, and baked cornbread for a special Thanksgiving snack with the Beginners. The Beginners invited us over for homemade applesauce and we brought our cornbread. It was a wonderful end to a full week of exploring and learning. I am so thankful to be able to teach all our wonderful EK Explores. I hope you all have a restful and joyful Thanksgiving! Let's Explore Buildings

Enjoying snowy and sunny outside time!
Our big adventure of the week was to walk around our school and look at all the different features of our building. I helped the students take pictures of what they saw so that we could study them later. Did you know our building has a garage? or stairs on the outside? Our school has lots of doors and is made out of many different materials. As part of our building study we will be learning about the tools used to build buildings. This week we introduced the hammer. Students practiced their hammering skills by nailing wooden golf tees into pumpkins. This was fun, but also great for our fine motor development and hand-eye coordination. Working on the covers for our Building Journals. Next Week
~We will be investigating the question "What do the buildings in our neighborhood look like?" ~Green Beans! We have met our first two goals! Keep bringing in the beans. Runaway Pumpkins!

Runaway Pumpkin Videos Please see the link in the newsletter email to view all the runaway pumpkin videos. We have videos of all the teams, and each of their tests. Check them out, the videos do an excellent job highlighting the excitement and process of our students. Here is a sampling. Halloween! The students had a fun day on Tuesday, beginning with an all school costume parade. They also decorated spooky cookies and made Halloween cards. After recess we carved two jack-o-lanterns. This was especially exciting since they had been looking forward to carving a pumpkin since our shopping trip to Fred Meyer. Journey to Oz Wednesday, we took a field trip to the PAC to watch the play "Journey to Oz." Our students were very excited to travel outside of the classroom and seeing a play was a new experience for some of them. They said their favorite parts were the storm (cyclone), the lion, the witch, and the wizard himself. Thank you, thank you to our parent drivers who made this happen!
