ART is all around us!

This past week found us making 300 flowers at the request of Danica Bartow, who is designing the layout for the dinner section of the Music Department's two concerts coming up. The students used many skills and techniques: for example, the Beginners practiced cutting out flowers with scissors. We have worked through a sequence of handling paper to make shapes, and the flower cutting was a natural technique to develop further. We used plain-edged scissors and decorative scissors. We used oil pastels for the coloring, and learned about saturated colors, opaque coloring, and reviewed our color wheel. With the decorative scissors we cut edges to make them rounded, angled, fringed, and random. It was fun!
The First, Third, and Fourth/Fifth Grades are working on their cardboard loom weaving. The Third made their own needles out of wooden stirring sticks. They have learned to roll a ball of yarn, weave over-and-under, and variations of same. We will proceed to knots. We have practiced slip and square knots for this. The Early Childhood classes worked on cutting flowers, and then made a face mask using colors. We worked with proportions of the face, and expressed these in papercutting. Other classes are painting canvases. I am arranging some field trips for March. In the past months, I participated in two group shows in the Valley, and will be in another one in March. I have a solo show scheduled in the Valley September/October. have a happy week!! February in Art!

Welcome to February! It has been a busy year!
Currently, the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades are working in textiles. We are weaving using cardboard looms. We have learned to make and warp our looms. The weaving has started, using the over-and-under technique. We practiced making square knots, and slip knots. Soon we will make decorative knots for the pouches we are weaving. The Beginners classes have been learning their handwriting, fractions through folding paper into sections, direction: center, right, left. They've been practicing words in Latin that consist of three letters. Most recently, we are practicing papercutting to make flowers. The K, and 2nd are almost done with their self-portraits. They are learning the techniques of chiaroscuro, sfumato, impasto, and alla prima. Acrylic paint is their medium. The EK classes are working with drawing and making flowers through folding and also cutting. Each child in the school is making flowers to be used on the tables for decoration. They are hand painted in representational, geometric, abstract, and non-objective styles. |
