Below are some pictures from our trip to Anchorage Museum. We toured the Art of the North gallery, studies the technology and innovations of indigenous peoples, toured a temporary exhibit called The Art of Fandom, and participated in a fantastic science class on the states of matter that involved dry ice and liquid nitrogen. It was a fun day!
What is Love?
2/17/2018
Love comes in many forms, and we use the word in many contexts. However, in mainstream culture, we tend to see more examples of romantic love than anything else. As a result, it's easy for kids to forget about all the forms love can take. In order to help 5th grade students understand the differences between all of the different ways love can be expressed, we did a project. This week for Valentine's Day, I gave students a "speed project" on the theme of love. Students were given one hour to learn one of the types of love, write a brief script, gather any necessary props or costumes, and perform in front of the camera. Check out the results of our "speed project" in the video below! Nature Play

What happens when kids freely play in the woods? They collaborate, use their imaginations, innovate, and problem solve. Check out the video I made to see your kids playing in the woods behind the school. It is great to see how positive and helpful to each other all of the kids were. Students earned a bonus recess as a reward, and they chose to wait until we had a good snow to use it. This video footage a couple of weeks ago. I hope you enjoy it! If you are interested in learning more about the subject, I recommend you check out the following resources: Nature Fix- book The Last Child in the Woods- book Explorer Matching Game

As our final activity in our exploration unit, students helped to create a game on our bulletin board in the hall. Each student researched two explorers and developed a list of clues about the person's life and important expeditions. The list of clues was printed and glued to the back of a portrait of the explorer. Students then drew the explorer's route for their most significant expedition. The matching game is played by trying to match up the explorers with their expeditions on the map. Parents and students from other grades are welcome to try their luck at matching up the explorers with the routes. Students are beginning their science fair projects in 5th grade. The first steps will be to come up with a good topic for an experiment and do some background research. After that, students will develop an hypothesis and design an experiment. All parts of the science fair project will be done at school, except the actual experiment will be done outside of school. Below are a couple pictures of students interacting with the bulletin board in the hall. |
