Floor Hockey
1/16/2018
Hockey is a very popular sport in Alaska and the students are ecstatic about it being the current unit in PE class. The weather isn't allowing us outside as much as we'd like, but that isn't inhibiting us from having a grand time in the gym. Every grade (even B and EK) has spent time the past two weeks learning the skills necessary to up their hockey game. We've talked about the rules, positions and skills needed to play and the kids have been impressively playing the full game this entire week.
Hockey has many benefits beyond the exercise aspect. It helps increase hand-eye coordination, spacial awareness, teamwork, communication, and balance (especially when they are actually on skates and ice). Watching the kids implement passing and showing awareness of how the game works strategically has been exhilarating. Seeing the whole picture of a sport can be tough, but these kids have increased those skills dramatically. Many if the kids have shown interest in playing hockey outside of gym class. There are a few students that play in competitive leagues around town and have great things to say about their experience in the sport. Below are some links to pages that have youth hockey leagues and programs that teach your child to skate in the process.
