Stronger than a Building

The blog I wrote before break was about community. As I reflect on distance learning, community seems to be a fitting topic yet again. Community, namely being part of our lovely classroom community of learners and friends, is what our sweet little ones seem to be craving most. Our classroom community looks different now, but it is still intact. Our little ones are still learning, still playing, still exploring, and still sharing this with others in their own ways. Some of you have been drawn into our community of learners in a deeper way, and I am thankful for that. A few of my favorite things about teaching are sharing discoveries with my students, seeing the world through their eyes, watching them light up with pride at those "aha" moments, and seeing them grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, explorers, and citizens ready to change our world for the better. Adjusting to a new way of life comes with overwhelm and stress at times, but I hope you are also experiencing some of the richness and joy that comes from being part of their learning, exploring, and discovering in this new and different way. I know this format has many challenges and shortcomings, but I have also seen our little ones grow in independence, explore and share their passions in new ways, and learn to adapt to and make the most of something that is not ideal. I hope that, when school is back in session, you treasure the time you had learning from home with your child. I hope that, even though the virtual platform pales in comparison to the real one, sharing these experiences with your little one gave you a glimpse into why educators think teaching is so magical and worthwhile. I have always counted it a privilege to partner with you in your child's education, and now I find myself more thankful for you than ever. Teachers are receiving a lot of accolade and credit across the country, but I want you to know how much I appreciate YOU. You have embraced distance learning with us and shown patience and understanding as we figure this out together. These precious little ones have always been our reason, and even though our days look different now, that has not changed. Like most of our students, I miss spending our days together at school. I miss the magic of learning and exploring together that I described above. However, I cannot help but to have a grateful and full heart to continue growing the lovely community we've built this year - both our classroom community and the greater school community. Thank you for choosing PNA, for continuing to trust us with your child's education, and for leaning into our community!
