The Olympic Spirit has caught on here at Pacific Northern Academy. Each class has been given a team to follow and root for by Student Council and they've been eagerly checking out the standings every morning on the updated medal count board. Students are learning about all the different Winter Olympic Events in gym class and even trying their hand at some of them. Here's some pics of the kids competing in the first ever Scooter Luge race! No children were hurt in the making of these photos..... Some of the things we've been talking about in class are: what it takes to be an Olympic Athlete, what kind of work ethic and dedication is needed to achieve such greatness, the difference between all of the events, why it's important to show good sportsmanship, and which event we think we could win a medal in. Do you have what it takes to become an Olympic athlete? Olympic Spirit Week February 19th-21st
Monday - Dress in your favorite color of the Olympic Rings (blue, red, yellow, black, or green). Tuesday - Dress like an athlete from your favorite Winter Olympic Event. Wednesday - Represent the Country that your class is supporting! Students will be involved in a school-wide mini Olympics on Wednesday the 21st from 12-1pm. They will try their hand at snowshoeing, hockey, speed skating, and luge/bobsled. Come cheer them on! We are all great artists!

February 2, 2018 Alumni Auction Art Project Complete!! The Alumni Auction Project is back from the framers! It hangs next to the Business Office door. Come see it while it’s up! Alumni Auction Art Project The alumni in town came together over Winter Break and created this triptych. The painting is of all the paths the alumni have taken since they left PNA. At the center is the strong, deeply-rooted tree of Pacific Northern Academy. Surrounding the tree are the many mascots that represent the High Schools the alumni have attended. The space ship represents the alumni who have gone beyond Anchorage for his or her education. The alumni signed the painting on the backs of the three paintings. Sami Buchanon, alumnus from the first year of the school, and now Board member, coordinated the project. Jacob B., Christina and Chad Y., Braxton B. and his daughter Paris, Allison C., Hannah and Sami P., Dylan and Lara E., Aidan C., Suzy S., Adrianna, and Hillary T. were among those able to attend one or both of the sessions held. Kathy Heinlein, Auction Chair, Lisa Maurer, Katie Strock, and Jennie Tschappat also visited. Best Wishes for the project were sent from Lizzy S. The sessions were held in Ms. Jaeger’s Art Room. A PNA Alumni Association was formed, with Sami B., Braxton B., and Christina Y. forming the organizing body. The canvases and framing by Denali Graphics were donated by Brenda Jaeger, Artist-Teacher. Blue.Hollomon Showing: Brenda Jaeger will have a 5'x4'w acrylic canvas, "The Way Home", in a group show at Jens Restaurant, opening 4-5pm on February 9th, 2018. This show will hang through July. She painted this work from a detailed drawing she'd made while flying to Alaska on an Artist-in-Education residency trip. Fall Semester PBL: Postcards of Hope The Art Department continued its tradition of sending Postcards of Hope to refugees overseas. This global Program, started by William Scannell, is in its fourth year. In the Art Classroom The Beginners and Early Kindergarten have been working on the distinctions between the Still Life, Landscape and Portrait. Starting in the beginning of the school year, work on the portrait has been reviewed and developed. Starting with the front, side, and ¾ views, young students have practiced drawing the proportions of the head. This week, they completed drawings and paintings of still lifes. Next, they will paint landscapes. Symmetry has been reviewed: symmetry, asymmetry, and radial symmetry. The shapes of circles, ovals, squares have been shaded to become spheres, cylinders, cones, and cubes. Art History has been discussed. We looked at how the Old Masters approached the still life, landscape, and portrait. They are starting on their Printmaking Unit, working with styrofoam plate relief printing. The Kindergarten is working on their second 16”x20” canvas painting of animals. Painted in acrylic, the Kindergarteners first drew out a design on paper, then redrew on canvas, and are painting now. The animals depicted are horses, bats, mice, and others. The First Grade is completing their second 16”x20” canvas. Their first canvas depicted an animal. The second canvas is a self-portrait. Color theory has been discussed through intermediate or tertiary colors. We’ve worked with our complementary color variations. Warm and cool hues are used to depict color perspective. Composition has been developed through looking at the Old Masters’ works, discussing his or her own compositions, and refining them. The Second Grade has completed two canvases and will be starting on woodburning. Chris and Steve Nyman have donated wood to the Art Department for the students. The Second Grade is using hand cut birch slabs with the bark on the sides. The wood is beautiful. Rachel Botson has donated child-sized gloves from Quincy, Illinois for the children’s hands, as the current protective gloves are too large. We work as a class to wood burn. Second Grade is really excited about this project. They are doing so well we may make a second woodburning. Next, we will be doing Wayang Kulit Puppets on a larger scale this year, as this will be the second year to make them. Our introductory event will be discussing videos on the making and use of Wayang Kulit Puppets. We will learn a story in the tradition of Indonesia. Last semester the 1st, 3rd through 8th did woodburning, and those projects are home. The Third Grade is completing the second canvas. Their first canvas, a self-portrait, has been taken home.Their subject is to select an image of a place they would like to travel to. These paintings are coming along well. Young artists are taking the images and changing them to meet their own ideas of composition. We are developing this analytic practice, as we have one extra class in art until March. The Fourth Grade is working on their second painting that tells a story and includes an animal. Some are working on his or her first painting, a self-portrait. Facility in mixing skin color has been practiced. The ability to see the shadows as lilac, olive green, red-orange, has been discussed and practiced. Mixing black and gray, and mixing one’s individual skin color has been a focus of interest. We are gaining as a class in our ability to do this, the more we have time to paint. Until March, the Fourth Grade has an extra class in art. The Fifth Grade is painting on canvases. They have finished their self-portraits and are working on a canvas of his or her choice. The Sixth Grade are starting on their second canvas. This canvas will have a narrative. The Seventh/Eighth Grades are working on their canvases. The first has a narrative and depicts one event from every year of their lives. This concept is taking a lot of thought. These paintings are very interesting! |
