In the Spirit...

...of things, second graders engaged in several academic lessons that were disguised as fun activities on Wednesday. The day started off with a enthusiastic greeting as each classmate entered the room, as they ooh'd and ahh'd over each other's costumes. Next we gathered as a school in the gym, where our morning meeting took place. Students greeted each other according to their costumes, and then we all played a fun rock/paper/scissors game. Next up came the annual Halloween parade around the gym to show off the amazing costumes. This community building event is looked forward to each year as a chance to see all of the costumes! Back in our classroom, second graders had to use their knowledge of fact and opinion to successfully separate the cards. They were also using logic and, at times, persuasive methods to defend their stances on certain cards. In the end though, they were successful! One of favorite activities came at the end of the day, when students tried to find the correct balance of ingredients in order to create a bubbling potion. After a discussion on lab safety, and assurances that these ingredients could be combined without any negative side effects, students were off, following the scientific method to find the solution. After some trial and error, testing and retesting, much discussion and reflection, the students were able to successfully create a bubbling potion. All in all, a great day of spooky fun still with much learning thrown in!
