Gettin' Mathematical

A Very Mathematical Parent LunchThanks to a lot of planning and hard work by parent coordinators, as well as our Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade students, we had an exciting and informative parent lunch this past Wednesday! While the lunch just so happened to take place on Halloween, the theme was purely mathematics! Students set up eight different stations around the lobby, each with a different math game that demonstrated a principle from what students have been studying most recently in class. The lunch was a veritable whirlwind of mathematic activity, as you can see in the photos below! Where is your child in the photos below? (And, for that matter -- where's Waldo in the photos below?) Games demonstrated required an understanding of products and factors, methods for multiplying fractions, an understanding of tiled arrays and how they relate to division and multiplication, and many other mathematical concepts! Additionally, later in the week Fourth and Fifth grade students worked on multiplication of fractions using tiled arrays. Students created patterns with tiles in order to gain a better grasp on exactly what, for example, 1/4 times 24, or 1/2 times 24, actually look like. Can you follow along with these math students as they walk us through principles of multiplying fractions? Meanwhile, in Mrs. Orbase's class, Third Grade used measuring strips of cubes to continue developing their understanding of multiplication. Using manipulatives, kinesthetic and visual learners are engaged in the lesson. The multiples strips give students opportunities to look for and make use of structures among multiples of the same number and of different numbers. For example, they can see that 7 groups of 10 is the same as 10 groups of 7. This also demonstrates the commutative property of multiplication. The Annual Halloween ParadeOn Wednesday morning, PNA hosted the annual Halloween Parade and Morning Meeting. Parents were welcome to join students to watch, and highlights included each class putting on their own parade, a themed game in which students in different costumes got to show off them off, and a competition to guess the favorite candies of PNA's teachers! In the video below, Fifth Grade's own Jamariol wins the 'favorite candies' competition! The Obstacle Course! The Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades had the honor of being a part of something very special this week -- the opening ceremony, and dedication, of an obstacle course designed and built by PNA's own Eighth Grade class! Students took a short hike over to Ruth Arcand Park, where they became the very first people in all the world to try out the obstacle course created by PNA's Eighth Grade class under the supervision of none other than Ms. Mariner! In the videos below, several Fourth and Fifth Grade students try a few obstacles for the very first time! Upon returning to the school, students celebrated with hot chocolate and cookies! In the videos below, students talk about their favorite parts of the obstacle course! For more information on all of the work that Ms. Mariner and the Eighth Grade students have done on the obstacle course (TWO YEARS OF WORK!), please click the button below! And, Just For Fun...Okay, this has nothing to do with math, or any other subject for that matter, but it's cool to know that all that Alaskan wildlife is right outside our school doors!
